Chance for Change

Chance for Change (formerly Transition Befriending) continues to be at the cutting edge of intervention in helping young people who are in some transitional stage in their lives, such as moving from school into employment, gain the skills, confidence and experience they need.

The aim of Chance for Change is to motivate and encourage young people who are disengaged with mainstream services and community activities. Rather than simply being befriended, young people are asked to contribute to a worthwhile task. (This can take the form of befriending another young person usually with special needs). Practical and emotional support is provided by an adult befriender while COVEY gives training, support and supervision. Young people respond positively to their redefinition as a 'service giver' rather than a 'service receiver'.


Young volunteers, in their role as Transition Befrienders, support other young people  and take some responsibility for the befriending relationship and assisted their adult befriender on their outings.

Young people learned:

  • how to take responsibility
  • to engage with others
  • about being aware of others and their situation
  • how to work as part of a team.
