COVEY news
Meet Libby!
When Libby started volunteering almost a year ago, she was no stranger to COVEY. Having previously worked in a one-to-one match 8 years ago, Libby was happy to finally be back, making a difference.
“I chose to volunteer with COVEY as I’m retired from full time work and now have extra time to help and support someone else. It feels good to give something back.”
When she isn’t busy walking her dog, Skye, or catching up with her friends and family, you’ll probably find Libby enjoying a swim or buying tickets for another music concert. You might even find her putting her digital skills to good use, learning to cook using YouTube tutorials!
Whatever she’s up to, you can be sure she’s busy. Libby certainly doesn’t shy away from life, as she admits she ‘once abseiled down a mountain for a bet!’ Libby is incredibly giving of her time, currently taking on two voluntary roles with COVEY: supporting a group of young people every Monday night and helping another young person in a one-to-one match.
Supporting these young people through some complex challenges and barriers in their lives isn’t always easy for Libby:
“It’s hard hearing some of the young people did nothing at the weekend or come to the group without the basic things they need.”
However, despite the challenges she faces, it’s obvious that Libby finds her volunteering roles incredibly rewarding:
“I only give a little bit of my time but I get so much more in return. It’s so great to see the young people grow in confidence, realising you have been part of their journey. Volunteering with COVEY is great. They’re a great team to work with.”
In amongst these difficult and rewarding parts of being a volunteer, Libby also remembers some moments that have truly made her laugh!
“I remember a young person I was supporting told me her gran was really old. Her gran was 66 and I had to laugh because I’m nearly 62!”
